Colonel John Brodie

 

Colonel John Alexander Brodie is a native of Denver, Colorado, but has been raised in over seven different locations in the US, mainly Chicago and Philadelphia. He graduated from West Chester University in 1982 with a B.S. in music education. After teaching in Colorado and producing a state champion marching band, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1984. Upon graduation from boot camp as the Company honor man Brodie states that "everything has been downhill ever since…"

Performing as a soloist and section leader in the USMC’s "Commandant’s Own" in Washington, DC, Brodie accepted the baton at the Virginia Military Institute in 1988. Presently, the VMI Regimental Band and Pipes consists of 130 cadets from all classes and majors at the Institute and perform in excess of 150 performances annually throughout Virginia and abroad.

Brodie holds masters and doctoral degrees in Music Education and performance from the Catholic University of America. He has performed throughout the world as a trumpet soloist with bands and orchestras in Europe, China, Australia, Japan, and Russia. He has studied conducting with Mstislave Rostropovich and David Fleisher and trumpet with Ken Laudermilch, Adel Sanchez and David Flowers. His military awards include the

Navy Achievement, Good Conduct, and National Defense Medals, Presidential Unit and Meritorious Unit Citations, and the VMI Distinguished Service and Achievement Medals.

He is married to Dr. Laura Fairchild Brodie of Raleigh, North Carolina and somehow they manage three small girls, Julia, Rachel and Kathryn.
