VMI Permit Instructions
Permits are used to grant exceptions to policies or to address a situation not covered in the Blue Book. Cadet must type permits using one of the following two forms:
        VMI Cadet Permit Form
        VMI Cadet Club/Sport/Group Permit Form
NOTE: You will need adobe acrobat reader 3.0 or better to access the permit forms. You may download free version from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html All computers in the computer labs have adobe acrobat reader.

If more space is needed than provided on the form, attach a typed addendum to your request. For special cases, a typed memorandum may be used but must include the following information as applicable:

a. Times and dates when absence is desired.
b. Purpose and reasons for which the permit is requested.
c. Roster of cadets (if more than one).
d. Destination and phone number.
e. Transportation and uniform.
f. Duty to be missed (if any).
g. Statement of restriction status. If the restriction status of the cadet is changed after approval of a permit, the permit becomes invalid.
h. Permits from cadets requesting to visit physicians and specialists in Lexington or elsewhere will note the specific time of the appointment and obtain the Institute Physician’s endorsement before submitting the permit to the Commandant’s Office. Whenever possible, routine medical appointments will be arranged at a period when no duty will be missed.

Permits must be submitted NLT four days prior to the effective date. Cadets must coordinate with appropriate individuals for signatures prior to submitting permits; this includes medical furloughs, club activities, interviews, or anything that requires classes to be missed or warrants approval from an advisor or doctor. Club activities must go through the Office of Cadet Affairs first for screening and recommendation for approval before coming to the Commandant’s Office. Club sports must additionally go through the Regimental S-6 to Cadet Affairs. NCAA Athletic teams must submit permits through the Athletic Director to the Commandant’ Office.

The Commandant approves certain Blanket Permits at the start of each academic year for special purposes. The following ten special permits have been approved this year and are posted in the barracks computer room and Commandant’s Office: General Permit, First Class Permit, Second Class Permit, Academic/Class Day Permit, Weekend Leave, Visit with Family, Visit with Date, Dine by Invitation, National Guard/Reserve Drill Duty Permit, and Hop Privileges.
